A QUESTION MANY OF US ASKED

Am I an alcoholic?

Most of us asked this for years before we answered it. Usually late at night, usually alone, usually hoping for a no.

There's no test here and no score. Nobody else can give us the answer, and this page doesn't try. What follows is a quiet check — seven things many of us recognised in ourselves — and what the Book says about deciding.

“We do not like to pronounce any individual as alcoholic, but you can quickly diagnose yourself.”

ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, 1ST EDITION (1939), P. 31

That's the whole stance of the program: only we can decide. If several of the statements below sound familiar, that's worth noticing — not as a verdict, just as information.

I told myself I'd stop after this weekend — and didn't.

This page is peer support, not a medical assessment. A doctor or counselor can help with the medical side.

If you’ve been drinking heavily every day: stopping suddenly can be medically dangerous — talk to a doctor about stopping safely. It’s a body question, and it comes first.
